It may seem at first glance that both of these diseases are very similar but there is a significant but subtle difference between ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.

One of the major differences between Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s disease is in the area of the body that is affected. When you are looking at Crohns Disease the entire intestinal tract can be affected but with ulcerative colitis the large intestine is the part of the digestive system subject to the disease.

Surgery is an option With ulcerative colitis as the disease can be isolated to just a portion of the intestine that can be safely removed.  There may be some significant repercussions and the patient will never have a normal bowel movement again. The result of the operation would be that their stool will be passed to a bag that they must carry with them and whilst this may not seem an attractive option it is almost certainly better than the alternative which is a lifetime of, what can be, excruciating pain.

If tracking down the part of the intestine that is being affected is difficult then treating an outbreak of Crohn’s Disease can be far more difficult. Diet has to be regulated and carefully monitored to give effective treatment and surgery will be ineffective in most cases. Considering the outcome of any surgery undertaken it is probably not worth the risk in most situations through this is certainly something you should discuss with your doctor if you are suffering with significant problems.

While the location of the problem is the biggest difference between ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, it is not the only one. Other differences include symptoms of ulcerative colitis that can include bloody diarrhea. This is not something that is generally found in Crohn’s Disease cases.

So there are some important but subtle differences between ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease and these will help decide on how the problems are treated.  Each one has different options for treatment and in many cases will use the same or similar methods. Whether that would be with drugs or more natural methods. Similar drugs and medications will likely be offered and both have positive results and can be used in similar ways.

If you have concerns or questions about Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s disease or any other medical condition you should consult a qualified physician.
